50 Years of OSC Booklet
Overview & Challenge
Two College of Optical Science professors wrote a book on the incredibly interesting 50-year history of the College (originally named the Optical Sciences Center, or OSC). This publication was promoted and sold through the College’s website.
One of the biggest challenges (with all the Optical Sciences work) was the use of the “legacy” diamond-rainbow logo. It was well-liked by all College students, alumni and faculty, but the logo did not fit in with the University’s new branding. In fact, legacy logos were highly discouraged in any material. I always had to walk a fine line between pleasing the University’s Marketing/Communications team, and the internal Collage team (including my supervisor, the Dean.) Eventually, through many meetings, University MarCom agreed we could use the legacy OSC logo as long as it didn’t take precedence over the main UofA mark. You’ll notice in this piece was created before those discussions, and the Dean insisted upon the legacy OSC logo take precedence.
Audience
Primarily faculty, staff and students at the College of Optical Sciences, though the general public interested in the history could also purchase the book.
Approach
The College of Optical Science was known for having an incredibly beautiful and modern building, which was used quite often in all of the marketing material. The shape and design of the building itself meshed wonderfully with the University’s new branding campaign, which had been launched a few months prior.
